Steve Maxwell formed TechKNOWLEDGEy Strategic Group (TSG) in 1992 to
provide consulting and advisory services to the environmental industry. The firm
offers strategic and management consulting services, as well as merger and
acquisition support to a broad array of public and private entities in the
environmental and water industries. Mr. Maxwell has been instrumental in
initiating and managing successful acquisition and merger transactions,
developing more practical strategic planning processes, building more effective
sales and marketing programs, and in helping to implement stronger management
organizations, for many of the leading companies in the environmental industry.
Over the years, his firm has been active in assisting major global corporations,
including firms like Hewlett-Packard, Georgia Pacific, Monsanto, Dupont,
Millipore, Motorola, Dow Chemical and many others, in evaluating and entering
various sectors of the environmental and water industries.
Mr. Maxwell has also built a leading specialized investment banking practice in
the environmental industry, representing various industry players – both large
and small – in merger and acquisition transactions. This practice has become
particularly well-known in the environmental engineering, laboratory testing,
and water/wastewater businesses. Over the years, TSG has worked with many of the
major players in the water and wastewater treatment business, and he has
represented buyers and sellers in numerous acquisition transactions, in deals
involving firms such as Brown and Caldwell, Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Waterlink,
Severn Trent, Camp Dresser & McKee, Harding Lawson Associates, ITT Industries,
Intertek, EA Engineering, MACTEC, numerous smaller companies, various private
equity investors, and dozens of environmental labs. He has also worked with many
start-up firms on investments in the water industry.
Mr. Maxwell has 25 years of experience in the environmental and resource
management fields. Prior to founding TSG, he served as Vice President of
Marketing for the hazardous waste management company USPCI, Inc.; Manager of
Strategic Planning for Union Pacific Corporation; President of ElectroPure
Systems – a wastewater treatment venture; and Executive V.P. and a Director of
Recra Environmental, an environmental lab and consulting firm. Previously, he
held marketing and financial staff positions in the mining and minerals
industry.
Mr. Maxwell is the founder and Editor of The Environmental Benchmarker and
Strategist, the industry’s most comprehensive source of competitive and
financial data. He is the author of numerous reports on the environmental
business and is active across the industry, serving on various editorial and
advisory boards. He is a also a contributing editor to American Water Works
Association Journal, the Environmental Business Journal, Environmental
Protection, and the Environmental Lab Washington Report. Mr. Maxwell holds
Masters Degrees in Public Policy and in Geology from Harvard University, and is
a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Earlham College.
Mr. Maxwell lives near Boulder, Colorado with his wife Susan, an artist, and has
two college-age children, Nicholas and Rebecca. He is an avid long-distance
runner and biker, and enjoys photography, skiing, hiking and other outdoor
activities. Originally from the mid-west, Mr. Maxwell spent many of his younger
years in East Africa, and still enjoys international travel whenever the
